PORTALE CON CROCI GRECHE

Sui piedritti di questo portale in via San Quintino si notano due grandi croci profondamente incise nei rispettivi blocchi di pietra. In araldica le croci con i due bracci uguali vengono denominate “greche”. Non è assolutamente possibile datare queste due croci anche se tutto fa pensare che siano medievali. Se l’arco in questione fosse l’ingresso di un edifico sacro, chiesa o convento, potrebbero essere “croci di consacrazione”, ma si tratta (con tutta probabilità) di un edificio laico. Quindi potrebbero essere state incise con finalità di protezione per coloro che abitavano in questa casa.

GREEK CROSSES
Two large crosses can be seen deeply carved into the stone posts of this door in the via San Quintino. In heraldry, a cross with arms of equal length is called a “Greek cross”. There is no way of dating these two crosses, although everything points to their having been made in the Middle Ages. If the arch was once the entrance to a sacred building, whether church or monastery, they could be “consecration crosses”, but in all likelihood it was a secular building and so they were probably engraved to protect the inhabitants of the house.
